During the 1940s and
1950s, Grace Lucile Olmstead Mershon (Mrs. Irving),
wrote a series of six books devoted to the history of
the Mershon family in America. Information for the books
was taken from the genealogical records maintained by
the Mershon Association, letters from involved families,
and independent research on the part of Mrs. Mershon.
In general, the books cover the first six generations
of Mershons.
The first book, “My
Folks” is an excerpt (Chapters 13, 14, and 15)
of a 227 page book privately prepared and printed for
Dr. Oliver F. Mershon, MD, on his ancestral lines. Since
these chapters deal with Dr. Mershon’s Mershon
ancestors, the chapters have been reprinted as the history
of Henri Marchand and Henry Mershon II (chapter 13),
the land holdings of Henry Mershon II (chapter 14),
and the history of the Mershon Association (chapter
15).
The second through the
sixth book are organized along the descendants of Henry
II’s five sons, with one of the books containing
the history of Henry’s daughters. There is a seventh
book, entitled “Mershon Genealogy, Section II,
Mershon Patriots” which gives a brief description
of the service during the Revolutionary War for those
of the Mershon surname.
