Event:
Mershon Annual Meeting
Date: August 13 & 14, 2010
Location: Lawrenceville, NJ,
Contact: E. C. Mershon,
(503) 252-7139, ECMershon@aol.com
Information: Plan now to attend our 2010 Mershon Annual Meeting and Reunion in
Lawrenceville, NJ, on Friday and Saturday, August 13 & 14, 2010.
On Friday afternoon, August 13, we will host an open house in the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville Chapel, 2688 Main Street (Route 206), Lawrenceville, NJ, for persons wishing to view our Mershon archives and our Mershon genealogy database.
Our Annual Meeting will begin at 9 am on Saturday morning, August 14,
tentatively scheduled at the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville Fellowship
Hall. After our business meeting, our proposed programs include a presentation
by re-enactor Clarissa Dillon of Haverford, PA, on Food and Drink in Colonial
Inns and Taverns. Clarissa has a doctorate in history from Bryn Mawr and has
been active in “living history” since 1973. Clarissa comes recommended to us by
Weedie Stokes after seeing another of Clarissa’s programs. This program will be
of special interest to those of us with colonial tavern keepers in our ancestry.
We will have a catered lunch in the Fellowship Hall.
Following lunch, Harrison and Linda Hunt of Port Washington, NY will present a program on the early history of the Newtown settlement on Long Island, NY.
Newtown is now the Elmhurst section of Queens County in New York City.
Newtown is where Henry Mershon II lived before moving his family to
Maidenhead, NJ (now Lawrenceville) in about 1700. Harrison and Linda are
especially qualified as historical researchers because Harrison is a recently
retired senior curator for the Nassau County (NY) Parks Department and Linda is
a retired librarian. Harrison and Linda attended our 2009 Mershon Annual
Meeting in New Paltz, NY.
Weedie Stokes of Lawrenceville, NJ, will present a program on Mershon
descendant Abner Reeder (1766-1841), a well-known silversmith in Trenton and
Philadelphia. Abner was a son of John and Hannah4 (Mershon) Reeder and a
grandson of Andrew3 Mershon. Weedie will display her collection of Abner
Reeder spoons made of coin silver.
We will have a program opportunity for attendees to show any Mershon related
items they want to share with our family.
On Saturday evening, we will have a group dinner at a local restaurant.
