The Southern Chapter

On February 27, 1987, a small group of Mershon descendants met in Sharon, Georgia. Their purpose was to form an organization that would locate other Mershon cousins living in the Southeastern parts of the United States and to hold annual reunions with their Southern cousins. From this initial meeting, The Southern Chapter of the Mershon Association was organized. The first annual meeting of the Southern Chapter was held on April 25, 1987, in Rochelle, Georgia. The Southern Chapter is an integral part of the Mershon Association and has the same stated purposes as the parent organization. It has its own slate of elected officers, publishes its own newsletter on Southern activities, and is financially independent of the Mershon Association.

The Chapter holds an annual reunion at a site chosen by the membership. The reunion has been held as early as March and as late as May, but generally in April. Prior reunions have been held in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, and Missouri. The membership of the Chapter (according to our newsletter mailing list) live mostly in the five states previously mentioned, but also includes cousins in Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Virginia, and as far away as California. Most of the reunions are planned as a family vacation, and many of the attendees spend up to a week at the reunion area.

An interesting aspect of the Chapter is the relatively high number of members who are greatly interested in their family history. The charter members of the Chapter were descendants of Enos5 Mershon, who was a son of Lt. Henry, son of Andrew3 . Enos was mentioned in his father’s will as living in a southern state. Up until 1935, the descendants of Enos Mershon were considered a “lost branch” of the family tree. From that point on, the genealogy of the descendants of Enos Mershon has greatly expanded. With the addition of Chapter members from other branches of the Mershon family, the genealogy of the Southern Mershon family has vastly grown.

Membership in the Southern Chapter is free (no dues) and is open to any descendant, or spouse, of Henry Mershon II. Financial support of its activities is provided by donations from our members. Membership entitles you to the receipt of our annual newsletter, and an invitation to our annual reunion. By requesting to be added to the Southern Chapter mailing list, you are automatically added to the Mershon Association’s mailing list and will receive their publications.
